Thomas A. “ Tom” Sprowls, 69, of Sheridan, died Saturday morning June 8, 2019 at Laurels of Carson City. Tom was born on October 19, 1949 in Muskegon, the son of Walter and Hazel (Sikkenga) Sprowls. Tom graduated from Fruitport High School with the Class of 1967 and later graduated from Central Michigan University in 1972. In the fall of 1972 Tom started his teaching career as an elementary art teacher with Belding Area Schools. He later would teach at the Middle School and other schools in the Belding area. He taught for over 24 years in Ionia and Montcalm County. He was loved by his many students and always believed teaching and learning could and should be fun. Tom had helped as a volunteer at the annual Wheatland Music Festival near Remus. He enjoyed pottery, music and family time. He was married on February 13, 1971 to Diane Stapleton.
Tom is loved and survived by his wife Diane and their children; Jennifer Pilkinton ( Greg) of Palo, Simon ( Charli) Sprowls of Stanton, his grandchildren; Kody, Erik, Kathryn, Conner and Cameron, his siblings; Sue Stephens of Sparta, Sharon Sprowls of Alabama, Jim Sprowls of Newaygo, his nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father Walter Sprowls , mother and stepfather; Hazel (Michael) Sprowls-Harjer, his in laws; Robert (Mercedes) Stapleton.
In keeping with family wishes cremation has taken place. A time to celebrate his life will be Friday June 14, 2019 from 4-7 pm with a brief prayers service offered by Pastor Ken Harger at 6:30 pm at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding. Memorials may be given to the Wheatland Music Organization or a charity of one’s choice.
