Sally M. Phelps-Powell, 82, of Belding, died Sunday December 6, 2020 at Spectrum Health United Hospital in Greenville. Sally was born on September 12, 1938 in Nelson Township Michigan, the daughter of Jerome Benham and Margaret Elizabeth (Wall) Phelps.
As a child she attended Benham School and later graduated from Cedar Springs High School with her best friend and cousin Olive Phelps. Sally was a member of the Belding United Methodist Church and enjoyed church functions and the women’s club. She enjoyed music and would play the piano on occasion. She was a homemaker and mother as well as working with her husband Larry at the Powell Brothers Grocery Store. In earlier years she had worked at Jolly Kid’s in Belding. Sally was blessed with wanting to care for and help others when she worked as a nurse’s aide at nursing homes in Belding, Greenville, Lowell and taking special care of Kareen Gasper of Belding.
She was married on May 2, 1958 to Lester “Larry” Powell. She was preceded in death by her husband Larry in 2017, parents; Jerome and Margaret Phelps and two brothers; Jerome Jr. Phelps and Earl Franklin Phelps. She is loved and survived by her sons; Brian Lester Powell and Douglas Jerome Powell, grandchildren; Jamie Lynn Powell, Somerset Mavunga, Amanda Sue Powell, Jessica Marie Powell and Dillion Mavunga, brothers; Herbert Lynn Phelps and his wife Diane, Glenn Allen Phelps and his wife Denise, brothers-in-law; Darwin Powell and his wife Judy and Dick Sorenson and his wife Jackie.
No services are planned at this time. Inurnment has taken place at Rest Haven Memory Gardens, Belding. The family would like to extend a special thanks to ComForCare Home Care of Stanton, Mission Point of Belding, Karen Weeks, Gabby, Ellen Sower, Mary Harger and Liane Lancaster for the special care given to Sally. Memorial contributions may be given to the activities fund at Mission Point of Belding.
