Nelson J. “Nels” Hoisington, 84, of Sheridan formerly of Belding, passed away Sunday morning May 12, 2019 at home under the loving care of his family and Great Lakes Caring Hospice. Nels was born on September 23, 1934 in Grand Rapids, the son of Albert and Margaret (Schultz) Hoisington.
Nels was married on December 28, 1951 in Belding to Lucille Calkins. In earlier years he and Lucille owned Jerry’s Bar in the old downtown of Belding. In 1972 during urban renewal they built the Driftway bar and owned that for many years. While he enjoyed the bar business his big passion was his farm on M44 east of Belding near Orleans. He enjoyed working the land and having nearly 100 head of cattle. Nels always kept his house and barns well cared for. He was proud of the hard work taking care of his farm and family. While never in the military everyone knew Nels ran a tight ship and he didn’t put up with a lot of nonsense. Later in life he drove bus for Belding Area Schools, enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and square dancing. He had a love of family and friends and will be greatly missed.
