James William “Jim” McCreery, age 79, of Belding, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, September 2, 2023. He was born in Alma, MI on August 13, 1944, the son of David and Eleonore (Thompson) McCreery.
On June 9, 1965, Jim married the love of his life, Suzanne Cutler. He met Suzie at Rock Lake near Edmore when they were just young teenagers. Together he and Suzie lived happily with their growing family. Jim became the favorite uncle, grandfather and great grandfather. Jim enjoyed going to his grandson’s football games and other activities. Jim always loved children, they would gravitate towards him and he would love them all just as they were his own. Jim was a passionate reader, he had been borrowing books from the Belding Library for years. Eventually the staff at the library knew Jim so well that they would pick books out for him. Aside from his love of reading, he was also an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and mushrooming. Jim will be remembered by his family for his sense of humor and caring nature.
Jim is survived by his wife of 57 years, Suzanne McCreery, children, Karen Howe of Greenville, David (Debra) McCreery of Belding, Craig McCreery of Stanton, bonus daughter, Julie Canfield of Baldwin; grandchildren, Ronnie McCreery of Belding, Garrett McCreery and Brianna of Howard City, Logan Howe of Greenville, Tim Howe and Katie of Dowling, Chris Masters of Twin Lakes, Holly (Adam) Smith of South Carolina; great grandchildren, McKenzie, Tessa and Macy McCreery, Taeli and Tristian Masters, Landon and Braiden Smith, Kalab Jensen; siblings, Thomas (Patricia) McCreery of Alma, Diane VanScoder of Maryland, Sue McCreery and Lois Thompson of Bitely, Sally Ann McCreery of Alma; brothers-in-law, Frank (Shirley) Cutler of Texas, Dennis (Sandy) Cutler of Greenville, Bob (Marvel) Cutler of Edmore; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Eleonore McCreery; son-in-law, Jeff Howe; great grandson, Tommy McCreery.
Memorial services for Jim will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral home at 1:00 pm. Visitation will take place from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm prior to the service. Pastor Mike Simmons will serve as officiant. Memorial contributions may be directed to the needs of the family.
