Alan Lee Johnson

Alan (Al) Lee Johnson, age 72, of Freeport, Michigan passed away unexpectedly, in his sleep, on Sunday, April 14, 2024. He was born in Detroit on December 8, 1951, the son of Devitte Johnson and Loretta (Taylor) Johnson. Alan was a graduate of Kelloggsville High School in Wyoming, MI. Soon after graduation, he was married and his daughter, Courtney, was born shortly after. Alan was a devoted father, always investing himself into having quality time with his daughter. Alan worked several places, including Capital Engineering, McDonnell Douglas, and Herman Miller. His interest for drafting and engineering led him to start his own plastics vacuum forming business with Lou Braun, business partner and dearest friend. They operated their business, Thermal Trends, for over 40 years, until their recent retirement. Since selling the business, Alan has been enjoying retirement, living the life of a bachelor, and spending quality time with family and friends.  Alan was passionate and strong, especially as a cancer survivor.  His relationships with others were very important to him, even keeping close with long distance friends. He thrived upon helping others. He was extremely dedicated to his family and was invested in their lives.  Alan enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren more than anything.  Alan was a free spirit who loved to travel and spend time in the sun. A few of his many favorite past times included golfing, hunting, fishing, camping, and sailing. He will be deeply missed by his daughter, Courtney (Matthew) Duffy; grandchildren, Brianna (Jon) Cornish, Jacob Duffy, Joseph Duffy, Miriam Duffy, Caleb Duffy, and Rebekah Duffy; great grandson James Cornish; sister, Nina Wallace; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his second wife of 23 years, Diane Johnson (Beutler) and his parents Devitte and Loretta Johnson. 

Funeral Services for Alan will take place at Ashley Baptist Church on Monday, April 22, 2024 at 1:00 pm. Rev. Dr. David A. Oliver will serve as officiant. Visitation will be held from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm prior to the service. Private graveside services will take place at Balcom Cemetery in Ionia, MI. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
